10 Ways to Keep Your Business Safe and Running Smoothly This Holiday Season
The holiday season can be one of the busiest times of the year for businesses of all kinds. Whether you run a retail shop, office, service business, or industrial operation, seasonal demands can put extra pressure on people and processes. Between staffing changes, increased traffic, deliveries, and year-end deadlines, small risks can easily slip through the cracks. Taking a few simple precautions now can help protect your employees, property, and operations while setting you up for a strong start to the new year.
1. Secure Your Premises
Shorter days and higher activity can make security a concern. Make sure doors and windows are locked, alarm systems are active, and access permissions for employees are up to date. Even small steps, like having a staff member monitor deliveries, can reduce the risk of theft or vandalism.
2. Review Fire and Electrical Safety
Temporary lighting, decorations, heaters, and extra devices can create fire hazards. Check that electrical outlets aren’t overloaded, inspect cords and plugs for damage, and make sure fire extinguishers are accessible and up to date.
3. Keep Walkways and Entrances Safe
Slip-and-fall accidents increase during winter and busy periods. Keep sidewalks, parking lots, and interior floors clear of ice, snow, or spills. Use mats and provide extra lighting where needed to protect both employees and visitors.
4. Maintain Employee Wellness
The holidays can bring stress, long hours, and illness. Encourage breaks, provide a space for staff to rest if needed, and promote safe lifting and movement for seasonal stock or heavy items. Healthy, alert employees are safer and more productive.
5. Organize Deliveries and Inventory
Holiday shipping and inventory cycles can be hectic. Track deliveries carefully, secure valuable items in storage, and clearly label stock areas. Organized workflows prevent lost items, reduce strain on staff, and minimize operational disruptions.
6. Protect Sensitive Information
End-of-year reports, client data, and employee information may be more accessible during seasonal busyness. Review digital and physical security measures, remind employees about phishing or scams, and limit access to sensitive materials to those who need it.
7. Encourage Safe Workplace Celebrations
Year-end parties and holiday gatherings can boost morale, but they can also bring safety concerns. Encourage responsible behavior, provide non-alcoholic options, and ensure safe transportation for employees. Keep decorations and food areas tidy to avoid accidents.
8. Plan for Winter Weather Disruptions
Snowstorms, icy roads, and power outages can affect staff and operations. Have a plan for remote work or delayed openings, keep emergency supplies on hand, and communicate updates clearly to employees and customers.
9. Refresh Emergency Procedures and Contacts
Ensure all employees know what to do in an emergency, from fires to medical issues. Maintain updated contact lists for key staff, local services, and emergency responders, and keep first-aid kits well-stocked and accessible.
10. Review Your Business Insurance Coverage
The end of the year is a good time to step back and consider your business’s evolving needs. Think about changes over the past year, including new equipment, expanded services, seasonal staff, or updated processes, and make sure your coverage still aligns with your operations. Touching base with your insurance agent now helps ensure your policies are up to date and sets you up for confidence heading into the new year.
