Not true. A standard home insurance policy does not cover all types of damage. In fact, no insurance policy covers everything. While homeowners insurance provides important protection against many common risks, there are key exclusions that every homeowner should understand. Knowing what’s not covered is just as important as knowing what is — especially before you need to file a claim.
🏠What Standard Home Insurance Covers
A typical home insurance policy includes coverage for a variety of incidents, such as:
- Fire and smoke damage
- Windstorms, such as hurricanes or tornadoes
- Theft or vandalism
- Water damage from burst pipes (not including flood damage)
- Liability protection if someone is injured on your property
This type of coverage is comprehensive for many common risks, but it doesn’t cover every situation.
What Standard Home Insurance Doesn’t Cover
There are notable exclusions in most standard home insurance policies, including:
- Flood Damage: Damage caused by rising water or floods typically requires a separate flood insurance policy. Flooding can occur from heavy rainfall, storm surges, or overflowing rivers, and it’s one of the most common uninsured risks. If you live in a flood-prone area — or even if you don’t — consider separate flood insurance.
- Earthquakes and Other Natural Disasters: Many policies don’t include coverage for earthquakes, landslides, or sinkholes. If you live in an area prone to these events, you may need specialized insurance, which can typically be added as a policy endorsement or thorough a separate policy.
- Wear and Tear: Routine maintenance issues, such as roof deterioration or plumbing leaks due to age, aren’t covered. Regular upkeep is considered the homeowner’s responsibility.
- Mold, Termites, and Pests: Damage caused by mold or infestations is usually excluded unless explicitly added to your policy, and there are limitations.
Additional Coverage to Consider
Depending on where you live and the specific risks to your property, you may want to explore additional coverage options:
- Flood Insurance: Often available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private insurers, this policy protects against water damage from floods.
- Earthquake Insurance: Covers structural damage and repairs caused by seismic activity.
- Sewer Backup Insurance: Provides protection if a sewer backup damages your home or belongings.
- Umbrella Insurance: Adds extra liability coverage to safeguard your assets if claims exceed your standard policy limits.
Some of these coverages can be endorsed (added) to your existing homeowners policy, depending on your insurer and your location. For example, sewer backup and mold endorsements are commonly added as riders for an additional premium. Others, like earthquake or flood insurance, may require a standalone policy due to their specialized nature.
That’s why it’s important to speak with an agent who understands your unique needs and can recommend the best route — whether that’s an endorsement or a separate policy.
🔎The Importance of Reviewing Your Policy
Every homeowner’s needs are unique. Reviewing your policy regularly and consulting with a Murphy Insurance agent can help ensure you have the right coverage. It’s always better to understand your policy’s limitations and have proper expectations before a claim situation occurs. Contact us today to review your options.
