With Hurricane Arthur raging up the Atlantic coast today, those of us in New England can be grateful that although Arthur is dampening some 4th of July celebrations, the storm is predicted to stay offshore, which will hopefully minimize any damage.

That said, it’s a great time to remember that if you need to update your insurance protection, you must do well before an impending hurricane. Generally, insurance companies will not allow increases to residential or commercial property coverage limits when a storm is imminent.

If you’ve made significant property improvements, expanded with an addition, built a garage, etc., it’s essential to contact your agent and review the changes and ensure that your property coverage limits are up to date so that you’ll be adequately covered should a loss occur.

In addition to property values, flood insurance is another type of protection you need to have in place well before a storm.  There is a 30-day waiting period after you have purchased a flood policy before the protection goes into effect.   So, generally, if you purchased flood insurance today, July 3rd, the policy wouldn’t provide coverage until approximately August 3rd.

With our busy lives, it’s so common to have a list of things to do that we keep putting off.  So, if you’ve had some policy changes you’ve been meaning to make, we encourage you to move those up the list so that you’ll be covered if something happens.
