Massachusetts Launches 2026 Low-Number License Plate Lottery With 237 Plates Up for Grabs

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is once again giving residents a unique opportunity to score a low-number license plate. For 2026, a total of 237 standard passenger plates will be awarded through its annual lottery.

If you’ve ever hoped for one of those hard-to-get plates, now’s your chance.

Applications Now Open Through August 14

Applications for the 2026 Low Number License Plate Lottery opened online via the myRMV Online Service Center at 10 a.m. on June 15. The window stays open until 5 p.m. on August 14, and best of all, there’s no cost to enter.

This year’s selection includes a mix of highly desirable combinations, from single- and double-character plates to other short sequences. Some of the available plates include 318, 7575, 8J, 66K, V3, and L99.

How the Lottery Works

Winners and alternates will be chosen using an electronic random number generator. The RMV will notify selected applicants by email no later than September 15, 2026. At that same time, the official list of winners will also be posted on the RMV website.

Who Can Apply

The lottery is limited to standard white passenger vehicle plates, and there are a few eligibility requirements to keep in mind. To participate, you must:

  • Be a Massachusetts resident
  • Own a current, active, registered, and insured passenger vehicle in the state
  • Submit only one application (even if you own multiple vehicles)
  • Agree to allow your name and city or town to be made public if you win

Certain groups are not eligible, including companies, corporations, commercial vehicle owners, motorcycle owners, MassDOT employees, and their immediate family members. Applicants must also have an active registration and no outstanding violations or obligations with the RMV.

One important note: you can’t request a specific plate number. All plates are assigned randomly through the drawing.

What Happens If You Win

If your name is selected, you’ll need to pay the special low-number plate fee along with your regular registration costs. The RMV will mail you instructions explaining how to transfer your current registration to your new plate.

Winners must complete the transfer and payment by December 31, 2026. If the process isn’t finished by that deadline, the plate will be forfeited and reassigned to an alternate winner.

It’s also worth remembering that these plates remain the property of the RMV. They’re tied to the winning applicant and can’t be transferred to someone else.

A Quick Reminder

This lottery applies only to standard white passenger plates. The RMV previously ran a separate, one-time drawing for the commemorative 250th Anniversary blue plates, which is not part of this current program.

Plan Your Routes | Auto Insurance Tips

Avoiding traffic jams isn’t just convenient—it’s safer. Heavy congestion can lead to impatient driving, sudden stops, and accidents. It also increases the chances of rear-end collisions and fender benders, especially in stop-and-go traffic. By planning ahead, you reduce the chances of encountering these hazards. Staying calm behind the wheel helps keep everyone on the road safer and reduces the risk of costly collisions or insurance claims. Read our Auto Insurance Tip #69 post to learn more.

Keep Your AC Chill | Auto Insurance Tips

If your AC doesn’t feel as cold, smells musty, or takes longer to cool the car, your cabin air filter may be to blame. A clogged filter limits airflow and forces your system to work overtime, which can put unnecessary strain on the vehicle and increase fuel use. In some cases, it can even reduce the effectiveness of your defroster during colder months. Regular maintenance helps your system run smoothly—especially during hot weather or long trips.
