According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, approximately 51,000 electrical home structure fires occur each year, claiming almost 500 lives.

Recognize this year’s National Electric Safety Month by taking these safety tips to heart:

  • Avoid overloads. Plugging in too many devices into an outlet or extension cord can lead to overheating and fires.
  • Limit the use of extension cords. While extension cords may be convenient, they should not be considered a permanent fixture in your home.
  • Keep things dry. Make sure you’re careful about using outlets and electronics near sinks, bathtubs, showers and other parts of your home where moisture may be present.
  • Unplug unused electronics. Refrain from leaving appliances and devices you aren’t using plugged in. Otherwise, you may have an inherently increased risk of overheating and power surges, and you may also see higher energy bills.
