Hurricane season is here. It runs for six-months starting June 1. The Atlantic is expected to have a “near-normal” hurricane season according to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There is a 70% chance of 9 to 15 named storms.

Last year, Hurricane Irene reminded the central and northern east coast of the damage and destruction that a hurricane can cause not only due to wind but also due to flooding. Now is the time to plan because once a storm is on its way you don’t want to be scrambling for supplies. While properties located near the coast have greater exposures, it’s important for everyone to have a plan as high winds can reach far inland. In addition to taking steps to physically protect you, your family, your property and your business in the event of a storm, it’s important especially important to make sure that you have proper insurance coverage on your property.

Once a hurricane has been announced, binding coverage in an affected area may not be possible, so make sure you’re protected now with the proper amount of home, condominium, renters and flood insurance. In addition to property, businesses need to consider having business interruption coverage.
