Every year, countless accidents occur because drivers aren’t prepared for unexpected encounters with animals on the road. Whether it’s a deer darting across a rural highway or a stray dog wandering into city traffic, these moments can be dangerous for both humans and animals. As urban development continues to expand into natural habitats, the chances of such encounters increase. Staying alert and understanding how to respond in these situations can make a critical difference in preventing harm and keeping roads safer for everyone.
- Remain alert at all times. Simply staying focused can help you react faster.
- Watch out for movement and shiny eyes on the roadsides. Slow down if you see anything suspicious. In addition, slow down on blind curve areas of the road.
- Reduce your speed if you see an animal up ahead. Helps you be prepared, gives you more time to react, and can reduce damage if a collision occurs.
- Slow down at designated animal crossing areas marked by road signs. These signs indicate that the area has a lot of animal traffic and an increased potential for accidents.
- Use your high beams at night. It makes it easier to see animals.
- Watch your speed, especially during dusk and at night.
- Do not swerve if you see an animal in front of you. It may cause you to hit another vehicle or lose control. Use your brakes immediately.
- Have your vehicle’s brakes and tires checked regularly. The ability to stop quickly can avoid a collision so be sure your car is ready to respond.
- Always wear a seat belt. It’s your best safety defense.
- Keep in mind that animal and vehicle collisions are especially common between October and December. Make sure you are especially alert and diligent as you drive during these months.
If a Collision Occurs
In the event that your vehicle collides with an animal, pull off to the side of the road and call the state patrol or local police department. Do not attempt to move the animal if it is lying in the middle of the road. Never leave your vehicle to check on an injured animal, as it may still be alive and potentially dangerous to you. Stay in your vehicle until help arrives.
