Honoring Black History Month: Contributions in the Insurance Industry
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans who have shaped industries, built communities, and created opportunities where few existed. The history of insurance in the United States is deeply enriched by Black leaders and entrepreneurs who overcame systemic barriers to provide financial protection, economic empowerment, and community stability.
Some notable milestones and figures include:
- Early Black-owned insurance efforts – African Insurance Company (Philadelphia, 1810)

African Insurance Company Founders
One of the first African American–owned insurance companies in the U.S., it grew from mutual aid traditions where communities pooled resources to cover burial expenses and other needs. This early effort demonstrated the power of community-driven financial protection in an era of limited options.
- Frederick Douglass Patterson – North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company (1928)
Co-founder of what became the largest African-American-owned life insurance firm, Patterson helped expand access to life insurance for Black families at a time when mainstream companies often denied coverage. His leadership set a standard for professionalism and community investment. - Frank L. Gillespie – Supreme Life Insurance Company (1919)
Gillespie launched one of the first Black-owned insurance firms in northern cities, providing fair and reliable insurance policies while fostering education on financial literacy and wealth-building within Black communities. - Abraham Lincoln Lewis – Afro-American Life Insurance Company (1901)
As the founder of one of Florida’s most influential Black-owned insurance companies, Lewis not only offered financial security but also invested in projects that strengthened communities, including the creation of American Beach, a historic resort that became a center of pride and culture. - William Nickerson Jr. – Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company (1925)
Nickerson co-founded one of the largest Black-owned insurance firms in California, expanding access to coverage and employment and creating a legacy of leadership that inspired future generations. - Ernesta G. Procope – Commercial Insurance Leadership
Procope became the first African American to establish a commercial insurance brokerage on Wall Street, breaking barriers in a highly exclusive industry and challenging discriminatory practices like redlining.
These leaders and milestones remind us that insurance is more than policies and numbers. It has long been a tool for opportunity, stability, and hope—helping families plan for the future, create generational wealth, and build stronger communities.
Their legacy continues to influence the insurance industry today, inspiring professionals and communities alike to pursue innovation, inclusion, and service.
