Accounting Assistant


job summary

The Accounting Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Accounting operation including management of staff.  S/he oversees all aspects of daily and monthly accounting transactions and creates accounting service and quality standards as set forth by the agency.

primary responsibilities & duties

This partial summary should not be considered all-inclusive

  • Actively manage, develop, and coach Accounting staff.
  • Oversee and manage the agency budget, expense statement, balance sheet, payables and receivables to ensure accuracy.
  • Process month end and year end close, including analysis and publication of information for financial statements.
  • Working closely with Accounting staff, process A/P, A/R, and regular Agency check runs.
  • Manage and process bi-weekly payroll.
  • Act as 401(k) Plan Administrator. 
  • Responsible for all financial aspects related to entities that are part of D. Francis Murphy Insurance Agency, Inc. and others assigned.
  • Oversee and monitor the agency credit and collections policies and internal controls.
  • Train local branch supervisors on accounting responsibilities and procedures.
  • Process internal reports related to financials, payroll and other management requests.
  • Act as primary liaison with outside CPA firm for annual audit and filing of quarterly and annual tax returns.

education & experience required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred or related business or finance degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant accounting and supervisory experience in an accounting department of a small to medium sized organization demonstrating increasing responsibility
  • Experience in a sales or service organization preferred.
  • Strong IT/data management background helpful.

  • Excellent technical accounting skills.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of accounting principles and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to respond to requests effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze, interpret and explain sometimes complex information.
  • In-depth working knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience with Quicken, QuickBooks, and Paylocity or other payroll and accounting management systems.
  • Possess positive attitude, high ethical standards, and ability to be a team player.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cordial and effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, carriers, vendors and other business contacts.
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent problem solving skills.
