Effective March 26, you need documentation showing U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S. as required by federal and state laws in order to renew or get any Massachusetts driver’s license, ID or learner’s permit. This is part of complaince with the federal REAL ID Act.

The MA Registry of Motor Vehicles will be closed from Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. until Monday, March 26 at 8 a.m.in order to perform a technology and software upgrade required to comply with federal security standards. All non-public safety services are unavailable, and the RMV will NOT process any transactions.
