Reaffirms Commitment to Small Business Owners
Central Mass, November 22, 2011 – As an independent insurance agent serving small businesses, D. F. Murphy Insurance Agency joined Travelers today in announcing its support for American Express’ second annual Small Business Saturday®, a day dedicated to bringing attention to the important role small businesses play in communities across the country.
“Small businesses are vital to prosperity here in Central Massachusetts and across the country,” said Michael Murphy, President. “Many of our customers are small business owners, and we understand the importance of supporting them by shopping locally. Knowing that for every $100 spent in locally owned, independent stores, $68 remains in the local economy,* we encourage all Americans to shop small at their favorite local stores to help fuel the economy as we head into the holiday season.”
Murphy Insurance Agency’s commitment to Small Business Saturday, which falls on November 26th, Thanksgiving weekend between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is just one way the company is supporting small businesses. In addition, Murphy Insurance has partnered with Travelers to provide small business tips and resources, including business continuity planning, disaster mitigation techniques and other resources to manage risk and limit business interruptions.
Facebook, Google, Twitter and other innovators have also collaborated on Small Business Saturday to offer a toolkit designed to increase online sales at small businesses. The business owner toolkit is available at facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday.

About Small Business Saturday
November 26th marks the second annual Small Business Saturday, a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Small Business Saturday (SBS) was created in 2010 by American Express in response to small business owners' most pressing need: creating more demand for their products and services. A total of 1.5 million Facebook users, 130 public and private organizations, and 41 elected officials declared their support for SBS last year. More than 100,000 small businesses downloaded SBS marketing materials, 10,000 businesses signed up for free Facebook advertising that ran on SBS, and 200,000 consumers registered their American Express cards to receive $25 statement credits when they shopped at a small business on SBS. Small retailers who accept the American Express Card saw a 28 percent increase in sales on SBS when compared to the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2009.
